Discussion Questions

  1. When have you experienced someone truly listening to you?   
  2. How did you know for sure that they were listening to you? How did that make you feel?
  3. What does Jeremiah 29:12 teach us about who God is and what He is like?

EXERCISE – Pair up with someone. Set a timer for ten minutes. Each partner will take turns having a ten minute convo where one partner can only ask questions. Then flip it around for another ten minutes.

      1. Why Listening is So Strategic
        1. In this fast-paced world, a true listener is rare. 
          1. Listening demonstrates sincere care and therefore builds trust.
        2. Listening begins with respecting another person’s story.
          1. As you listen, see if you can pick out a motivational theme in someone’s story.
        3. As you listen, look for common ground between you and the person you are listening to.
          1. Do you detect any needs?  Do you hear any concerns?
      2. Tips on How to Listen Well
        1. Attending – Pay attention to what someone has to say.
          1. Try to not be “forming your next questions or reply” while the person is speaking.  Engage them by really processing what they are saying.
        2. Listen with your eyes.
          1. Give appropriate “others-centered” eye contact.  The eyes communicate powerfully and that you are genuinely interested in what they are saying. 
          2. Don’t be creepy, 👀LOL
        3. Follow what they are saying.
          1. Enable the other person to speak MORE.
          2. Ask clarifying questions that are open ended. “Can you tell me more about that?”
        4. Reflecting – Mirror back to someone what you think they said.
          1. Ie. “Let me see if I understood you correctly…” (then state what you understood)
